As part of a long-term vision to develop a fully functioning Community Center, the campaign funds will go to rehabilitate the Visitation Church for further development. It will become a hub for various programs and services, including educational, vocational, healthcare, youth and community engagement.
What Communities Need
Communities need central gathering spaces where neighbors can build relationships and people
can experience life-enriching opportunities.
With that in mind, Cass Community Social Services plans a Community Center at its Detroit campus.
Building a Community Hub
CCSS acquired the former Visitation Church across from Cass’s World Building for the purpose of developing a Community Center. Plans are still in development, but the Community Center could provide spaces for:
- teen center
- gymnasium
- jogging track
- boxing area
- medical clinic
- classrooms and training areas
- grocery store
- senior citizen spaces
- sustainable energy, and more.
The vision is that people will come together for positive purposes and, in the process, build community.
PHASE I Strategy
Rehabilitation of the Building
Phase I of developing the Community Center is to invest in the rehabilitation of the building. The structure of the facility is solid, but years of neglect have taken a toll. Improvements include lead and asbestos abatement, new windows, safety features, disability access, and so on. Planning is underway with other organizations that can bring their special expertise to the Community Center as a service to the community. It will become a hub of activity that will benefit the entire surrounding area.
The cost for Phase I is $4 million
These funds will make it possible for the Community Center to improve the building’s infrastructure and pave the way for the programs described above.
Cass reaches out to meet the very basic needs of life necessities of our neighbors who might otherwise be left homeless, hungry, and unsafe. With those fundamental needs served, Cass opens up a world of life enhancing possibilities for those it serves.
