The Seasons Warming
CENTER

By retrofitting the existing Scott building, CCSS will be able to open an expanded warming center for the cold months in Michigan. It will provide a safe, warm space for homeless persons, with meals and support services. This will increase capacity by 1/3 and provide a place for volunteer groups to stay in the summer months.

Providing Safety
& Warmth

Michigan winters can be long, brutally cold, and snowy. Imagine how you might deal with those conditions if you were homeless. It would be an ongoing struggle to find shelter and warmth. If you are part of a family that is without a home, your desperation would be extreme. It could literally be a matter of survival for you and your children.

One of Two
Centers in Detroit

That is why CCSS provides a warming center. Funded to shelter 40 people, the Cass Warming Center served as many as double that nightly number in two bedrooms. In 2023, 104 adults and 82 children relied on the program for food, showers, laundry, assistance with securing housing, transporation, employment, as well as medical and mental health help, but there was little privacy.

To meet this challenge, the campaign will raise $3.4 million to provide better space with family bedrooms, for people needing a place to stay.

A Permanent Solution

One of Cass’s properties, the Scott Building, will be retrofitted to become the new Seasons Warming Center. After studying various options that were cost-prohibitive, the Scott Building became the most effective, efficient, and fastest solution to warming center demands.

The Need Has Increased

In order to do this, significant updating and renovation of the building will be required. Once completed, the Seasons Warming Center will provide 1/3 more capacity for overnight guests and do so in more segmented areas (instead of one big bullpen). Of course, in addition to shelter, all those served would have access to the many services CCSS provides.

Features of the
Seasons Warming Center
will include:

  • Increasing nightly capacity 40 to 75
  • Providing 32 bedrooms (one per family)
  • Creating 9 new bathrooms and showers
  • Making washers and dryers available
  • Creating a common dining area
  • Providing a generator for the building
  • Upgrading security for the safety of guests
    and staff
  • Installing solar energy panels for clean, sustainable, cost-effective energy
  • Revamping the HVAC system
  • Providing a location for out-of-town volunteer groups to stay in warmer months
